One of the parts of the story of Jesus makes it harder to believe for me. It's that he would have ever been popular among Jews under occupation. Either the Romans helped set him up - in which case they would be reluctant to crucify him - or the person did not exist. I think the latter option is more likely because the Romans did not need the consent of the Jews. They did not need to set up a puppet in the population. They had their crosses and so forth to hold down the Jews.
